Ebook About Something in the Wine is a story about love, friendship, and coming to terms with what it means to be yourself. All her life, Annie Prideaux has suffered through her brother’s constant practical jokes. But Jake’s last joke is one too many, she decides when he sets her up on a blind date with his friend Drew—neglecting to tell his straight sister one tiny detail: her date is not a man, but a lesbian.Annie and Drew decide it’s time to turn the tables on Jake by pretending to fall in love with each other. At first glance, they have nothing in common. Disillusioned with love, Annie focuses on books, her cat, and her work as an accountant while Drew, more confident and outgoing, owns a dog and spends most of her time working in her beloved vineyard.Only their common goal to take revenge on Jake unites them. But what starts as a table-turning game soon turns Annie’s and Drew’s lives upside down as the lines between pretending and reality begin to blur. This is a second, revised edition of Jae’s award-winning lesbian romance Something in the Wine. It includes the sexy follow-up short story “Seduction for Beginners” as a bonus.Book Something in the Wine (The Moonstone Series Book 1) Review :
I gave this four stars because I admire the author and her vast library of excellent stories. This one was OK, but not as good as most of her other books.I had a hard time liking Annie, in fact after finishing this book last night, and after giving it some thought, I still have a hard time liking her. She is supposed to be inexperienced in love and sex, but this character took it to depths with which most people can't sympathize. She is completely awkward and without apparent understanding of how the female anatomy works. She is disapproving of anything out of the ordinary, and kind of a cold fish. Now, I really liked Drew, although I wouldn't have had nearly the patience with Annie as Drew had. But I liked her character and the development of her character as the story progressed. And what was with Jake, Annie's brother? Did this guy have one single redeeming quality? And why did Annie call him, after the years of torture she suffered at his hands, to get tips on how to seduce a woman? He's the last person I would have called.Jae has hit many home runs. This was not one of them. But don't let this review keep you from reading all her other romances. They are excellent, which makes this one pale in comparison. I really did enjoy this book. The story was a good one. For the most part, the characters were well written. The struggle that one the main characters had with accepting her attraction to another woman was more than reasonable. However, at various times that character's struggle crossed the line into homophobia. As irritating as that was, I was okay with that at first because I'm sure there are people out there who have that same struggle. There's such a delicate balance to be struck between keeping elements of a story as real as possible, while at the same time not weighing it down to the point of being frustrating.Having said that...What frustrated me was how that struggle lasted well past the point she actually started dating the woman she said she loved--essentially right up until the last page or two in the book. The book would have been so much more satisfying if that particular drama would have ended sooner. After all, her lack of a spine for most of the book when dealing with her family was more than enough of a character flaw. Just one or two more chapters of Annie having come to terms with her sexuality would have improved my overall satisfaction with the story dramatically. It may sound like I didn't think much of Annie, or the book in general. That's not true. I would still recommend it. The romance itself was pretty great.
